Over the past couple of years, Bell & Ross have expanded their world beyond their heavy aviation inspiration. For 2021 however, they have decided to wind the clock back and look to the skies once again. This time around, they have paired an iconic aviator’s complication—the GMT—with their iconic aviation-inspired case—the square BR—to offer a very cool BR 03-93 GMT.
With the BR collection inspired by the gauges of an aeroplane cockpit, and aviation the most common way people cross time zones, why aren’t there more GMT watches in this collection? The first GMT in the square case came back in 2007 with the BR 03-51 Titanium followed by a carbon version in 2013. These old GMTs however displayed the second time zone on a subdial at the 6 o’clock position. Thankfully, these designs have phased out.
In 2018 Bell & Ross launched the BR V2-93 GMT with a round case and a 24-hour bezel. And for the BR 03-93 GMT they now also offer a 24h bezel, and this time made it a bi-directional rotating one. This move perhaps comes following the success of their BR 03-92 Diver, the world’s first square dive watch, proving that maybe their fans do like a rotating bezel on a BR case.
The bi-directional bezel on the BR 03-93 GMT adds yet another element of functionality to these tool watches, with the ability to track a third time zone. The first time zone is displayed on the dial, while a GMT hand points to a separate time making one full rotation in 24h. The third can be indicated on the bezel, rotating it left or right to add or remove hours respectively. The bezel is made of anodised aluminium, nothing too flashy, but is totally in line with their intention of positioning it as a tool watch.
With the BR 03-93 GMT designed based on functionality and legibility, it uses a simple colour scheme to get the job done. The silver applied indices contrast nicely against the matte black dial while the hits of red draw the eye to the GMT function.
The Bell & Ross BR 03-93 GMT has a retail price of MYR 17,000. It will not be replacing the round V2-93 GMT but rather serve as an additional choice for Bell & Ross fans.
