With the threat of COVID-19 spiking again always looming in the background, Malaysia chose not to have a full-blown celebration for Merdeka this year. And with Malaysia day just around the corner, now is the perfect time to look back at a collection that we missed, a collection that has a number reflecting the year our nation was formed. And that is the Breitling Superocean Heritage ’57 capsule collection.
It would be great to think that Breitling dedicated a collection to the National Day celebration of Malaysia. But unfortunately, we don’t have a mature enough watch market like our neighbours to the south where even brands like Patek Philippe create special editions for the country. This Superocean Heritage ’57 collection was actually inspired by the laid-back surfers of the 50s and 60s.
Right off the bat, you can see a very distinctive and retro look on the watches in this collection. And this is because the design was taken from the Superocean made in 1957. This will be a capsule collection for Breitling meaning that it will be produced only for a limited time but it will not be limited in quantity. The watch will be available in a black or blue dial and for those wanting a more luxury-driven aesthetic, there is also a two-tone version with 18k red gold.
Being a capsule collection, Breitling was able to have fun with the design, even offering a limited edition version (this one is limited to only 250 pieces worldwide) that embodies the psychedelic colours of ‘hippie’ subculture. This watch comes in the same case design as the others in the capsule collection but offers indices of various colours as it makes its way around the dial.
Underneath this fun exterior, the watches in the Breitling Superocean Heritage ’57 collection is powered by the Caliber 10 automatic movement. It has 42 hours of power reserve and is also Chronometer certified by the COSC proving its prowess when it comes to timekeeping precision.
